Materials Needed

  • Assembled flute
  • Metronome (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Choose a comfortable note in the middle register.

  2. 2

Play the note with a gentle 'tu' tongue stroke. Keep your tongue light — like saying 'du' instead of 'ta.'

  3. 3

Play 4 tongued notes in a row at a slow, steady tempo.

  4. 4

Rest, then try 8 tongued notes in a row.

  5. 5

Focus on keeping the sound smooth between each tongue stroke.

  6. 6

If using a metronome, set it to 72 BPM and tongue one note per beat.

  7. 7

Gradually try to make your tonguing lighter and more connected.

Practice Goal

Tongue 8 notes in a row with a light, even stroke and steady tempo.

Encouragement from Ms. Michelle

"Light tonguing takes patience. If it feels awkward at first, that means you are learning something new — and that is exactly how progress works."
