First Sound
Hold just the head joint of your flute with your left hand.
Cover the open end of the head joint with the palm of your right hand.
Rest the lip plate gently below your bottom lip. The edge of the blow hole should line up with the edge of your lower lip.
Keep your lips relaxed and say the word 'pooh' gently into the flute.
Blow a gentle, steady stream of air across the blow hole — like cooling a spoonful of soup.
Listen for a clear, steady sound. If it squeaks, try blowing a little softer.
Try to hold your sound for 3 to 5 seconds.
Make a clear, steady sound on the head joint for at least 3 seconds.
"Every flute player started right here. If you can make even a small sound today, you are doing great!"
